Q:   I know someone who was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis at age 19 (he is now near 30) and it has been progressing more quickly recently ~ I think it may also be aggravated by his job which is mostly at a computer. Is anything specific he can do, or any research showing yoga benefits for Ankylosing Spondylitis ?

While there may not be direct research on the benefits of yoga specifically for Ankylosing Spondylitis there is much evidence on the benefits of yoga for managing the symptoms of AS including inflammation and pain, specifically back pain. And yoga is very helpful and effective for reducing suffering. 

Research shows movement can be helpful for Ankylosing Spondylitis but high impact movement is not recommended. Gentle yoga to lubricate the joints, calm the nervous system, reduce cortisol and inflammation would be very helpful. The daily 3 on the back world be great.  The rib cage can get tight and effect breathing. Lateral stretches and pranayama would be very helpful.

Knowledge of sutras on suffering very helpful. Connecting with Self, surrendering, controlling the thought waves, acceptance, a road map for flowing through life minimizing the suffering and optimizing your experience of the journey. 

Yoga takes the whole being into consideration. Ankylosing Spondylitis (and all life experiences) effects all the kosas.  Therefore a practice that addresses all the kosas  is most helpful. Pranayama and meditation very important for controlling pain. Controlling thought waves important for reducing suffering.

Plant based diet is the best approach more so than yoga …. anti inflammatory diet: I recommend the oel Furhman protocol. Eat to Live gives a good start for this.
TriYoga Therapeutics and pranayama creates synergy of benefits because it enhances nutritional circulation deep into tissues. Participate in therapeutic TriYoga as able ~ with the nutritional protocol to reduce inflammation. Can’t do nutritional protocol part way otherwise benefits maybe unclear. Try for a month to see. Go from there.
